Must-Have Skincare | Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

Laneige is a brand name that will definitely pop up whenever one is talking about or thinking of K-Beauty. On their website, their brand story states that “LANEIGE specializes on skin’s moisturizing mechanism based on the idea that a well-hydrated skin is the solution for many skin problems. The mechanism involves the skin to create moisture, strengthen its barrier, and purify on itself to become more than a temporary shine.”

Besides being one of the earliest established K-Beauty brands, Laneige is so well-known and trusted by many because of their star products that somehow shaped K-Beauty product favourites such as BB cushion and sleeping mask and recently, the cream skin refiner.

Laneige Sleeping Mask is a product that first introduced the concept of sleeping mask (or more known as ‘overnight mask’ in the west) that is later followed by other brands. I am so glad that I hopped on the sleeping mask bandwagon in 2017 because now, I cannot NOT have this sleeping mask, ever! A sleeping mask is a high-power moisturiser (that is usually thicker in consistency) used as the last step in the skincare routine, especially when skin needs some intensive hydration. The product is applied just as you would a mask, with nothing after or on top of it.

Water, Butylene Glycol, Cyclopentasiloxane, Glycerin, Cyclohexasiloxane, Trehalose, Sodium Hyaluronate, Oenothera Biennis Root Extract, Prunus Armeniaca Fruit Extract, Beta-Glucan, Chenopodium Quinoa Seed Extract, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Magnesium sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium chloride, Potassium alginate, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Polysorbate 20, Dimethicone, Dimethiconol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Propanediol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Stearyl behenate, Polyglyceryl-3 methylglucose distearate, Hydroxypropyl Bispalmitamide MEA, Inulin Lauryl Carbamate, Alcohol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Carbomer, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Phenoxyethanol, Fragance, Blue 1.

In this product, the humectants (the ingredients that work by attracting water and bringing moisture to the skin and hair) are butylene glycol, glycerin, trehalose, sodium hyaluronate, beta-glucan, dimethiconol, propanediol and caprylyl glycol meanwhile the emollients (ingredients that fill in the rough patches of your skin and instantly give you that soft, smooth skin feel)  are cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane, dimethicone, dimethiconol, stearyl behenate, hydroxypropyl bispalmitamide mea & caprylyl glycol. There is also a brightening ingredient which is the ascorbyl glucoside.

According to COSDNA, this is one of most non-comedogenic moisturizers available today. The only ingredients that came up as potentially pore-clogging are butylene glycol and dimethicone, which both scored at nefarious 1/5 on the comedogenity scale anyway (from

Smell & Texture

It smells really pleasant but nothing too strong or bothering, it’s in fact quite calming. The texture is slightly thicker than the usual gel-based moisturisers. It feels so hydrating and watery but the texture is not runny or goopy with the consistency neither too thick nor too light.

Upon application, it feels smooth and cooling. It’s tacky when you first apply it, but after a few minutes it sinks in really really wonderfully and acts as a protective layer on my skin as I sleep through the night.

Why I love it to bits

  1. Instant Hydration

I have used this since 2017 up until now and it has never, never, not hydrating. Be it on a scorching hot afternoon, a chilly rainy night, or a humid day, this sleeping mask performs well, regardless of the weather. The instant effect is no kidding, really! I really love it on days when my skin needs TLC and this instantly picks me up. I kid you not, you really need to try this once and you’ll fall in love in no time.

  1. No-nonsense ingredients

This sleeping mask never irritate or cause my skin to have breakouts due to clogged pores or anything. I love it for its non-comedogenic trait to my skin and not only that, it is in fact a saviour for times when my skin is acting up. It contains sodium hyaluronate which is one of my favourite humectants that always bring up my skin hydration level.

  1. The packaging is practical

I have always fancied Laneige products packaging that is consistently simple and easy to use. The blue jar is sturdy and is sealed with a foil cover.

It also comes with a spatula so it is hygienic and spares me the hassle of having to look for one. Scooping the product out of the jar also feels nice and easy.

  1. Flexible

This water sleeping mask is great to be used on its own after toner (or even straightaway after cleansing on a really really busy or sick days) and it also fits perfectly even in a longer routine. It also goes well with ALL of my skincare products, yes, it is true! For me the flexibility is amazingly fool-proof, hence why I need to have this product and a back up and a back up for that backup lol.

  1. It works!

It does what it claims to do, really. Brands that over-claim feels like a fake hope to me and it is one of the biggest turn-offs, and that is never the case with this one. It claims to gives the skin hydration even to the deepest corner of any parched skin and it does just that. I wake up to a supple, smooth, and well-moisturised skin.

This is one of the few products that I have kept on purchasing since 2017. I have tried several other sleeping/overnight masks but I always come back to this one. It’s a 5/5 product for me!!
