Having naturally sensitive skin and reactive to harsh ingredients, I’ve always been very cautious with chemical exfoliants. But when I found out that By Wishtrend had released an AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acid) starring mandelic acid, I was immediately intrigued.
Why? Well, when it comes to AHAs, mandelic acid is arguably one of the gentlest on skin due to its large molecular size which enables it to penetrate the skin at a slower rate. This makes it less irritating compared to, say, glycolic acid.
So, how did this exfoliant fare for my sensitive, acne-prone skin?

How to use:
After cleansing, apply an adequate amount of product to the skin and pat lightly to absorb. If more effective exfoliating is desired, saturate a cotton pad with product and use it to wipe the skin gently.
- Limit the use of this product depending on your skin type, eg. for sensitive skin, 2-3 times a week use is recommended.
- For morning use, please make sure to apply sun protection after using the product.
- Recommended to not use the product with other facial scrubs, AHA/BHA and vitamin C products.
Mild acidic chemical scent. It smells a little “sharp”, if that makes sense. Overall though, not that offensive.
Tested to be around ~4-5.
Light, watery liquid with a pale yellow tint. Absorbs into the skin easily with no noticeable residue.
My Skin Type:
Sensitive (prone to redness and irritation), combination-dry, acne-prone and dehydrated.
I’ve used this exfoliant for almost a year now and I must say that I’ve had a mostly positive experience with it. On the plus side, I love how quickly it works to smooth out my skin texture, especially when I slack off with my routine. Additionally, when my skin was at its strongest state, I noticed that I could even use this product every day post-cleanse! It definitely helped to brighten and even out my skin tone overtime, as you’d expect from a good chemical exfoliator. Most notably though, is how it excels in zapping away my whiteheads and clogged pores immediately after use!
However, I did also experience ill-fated skin woes with this one. The most prominent being that I experienced a chemical burn using it when my skin was particularly sensitised. So do be careful. Also, if you do have open wounds, be careful because it does sting!
All in all, the By Wishtrend Mandelic Acid 5% Skin Prep Water is a product I’d definitely recommend for sensitive, acne-prone skin types – provided that you’re careful with it! For those with stronger skin, it might work great in the long-run as a daily exfoliator, but for the rest of us… please be cautious as you would with other exfoliants.
Alternatively, if you’re a beginner in the world of acids and would like to try an AHA, this would be a great choice. Just remember to be gentle and use it max 2-3 times per week!
