Finding lipsticks that match your skin tone can often be a minefield, but with the rise of make-up enthusiasts providing unfiltered swatches online, it’s definitely been easier for me to find a couple of “safe” shades I feel comfortable sticking to. So, to pay it forward, here’s a couple of lipsticks from Maybelline that fit my personal MLBB conditions.
For reference, I have a medium warm-neutral skin tone with the following shade matches:
- NARS Sheer Glow Foundation in Punjab
- Laneige BB Cushion in #31
- MAC ~NC25-30
- The Ordinary Serum Foundation in 2.0YG / Coverage Foundation in 2.0N
- Moonshot Micro Correctfit Cushion in #301 (a little light)
- Wet n Wild PhotoFocus Foundation in Golden Beige
But first... what is MLBB?
Unless you’re a fellow beauty enthusiast, I understand your confusion, but otherwise… girl, where have you been? Just kidding! Maybe you’re just dipping your toes, eh?
“MLBB” is an acronym meaning “My Lips But Better“. As eloquently said by FEMALE Singapore:
NOTE: MLBB shades are not the same for everyone, but if you match any of the foundation shades above, I bet that these babies would definitely suit you as much as it does for me!
FOR LONGEVITY: Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink — #210 Versatile
Contrary to the image above (my phone camera couldn’t pick up the shade quite right, but it’s more accurately shown in the comparison swatches below), Versatile translates into a sweet peachy-pink hue on me. Especially considering it dries down a bit darker later. I honestly bought this on a whim after hearing various reviews on this lipstick line from Maybelline, and it’s honestly been my go-to longlasting lipstick since!
On me, it lasts pretty much all day — yes, even after eating and drinking! And even if it does wear off (sometimes with oily food), I’ve found that it doesn’t look very noticeable, especially since it is a shade close to my natural lip colour.
Also, a common complaint with this line of liquid lipsticks is that it can be drying on the lips. While I don’t personally find this to be the case for me on average, I definitely do advise staying staying away if you’re prone to chapped lips as it may worsen your condition.
Additionally, do make sure that you have a good makeup remover for this baby because it will not come off easily!
FOR COMFORT: Maybelline Color Sensational Powder Matte Lipstick — #MNU11 Toasted Brown
Not gonna lie, but the moment I swatched this one in store, I was sold! It is, by far, the most natural warm-pink shade with a brown tinge that doesn’t make me look dull and doesn’t make me look older than my actual age. It also feels very, very comfortable on the lips due to the lightweight and creamy texture, so those with dry lips – this one’s for you!
The cons to this baby, though, is that due to the creaminess, it is not long-lasting at all and will wear off almost instantly after you eat or drink. So you’ll definitely have to make time for reapplication post-food hunting. Also, an important warning: DO NOT LEAVE THIS LIPSTICK IN HIGH TEMPERATURES! Long story short, I once left mine in the car by accident, and when I remembered, the lipstick had melted considerably… As you can see, it’s actually a little deformed now because I tried to fix it – which worked ok, but I permanently store it in the fridge now. 🤣
Lastly, here's a side-by-side shade comparison.
…and that’s it! I hope that these mini-reviews/sharing of my current favourite Maybelline MLBB Lipsticks have helped! If you’re around the same skin tone as me and would like to recommend me some new lipsticks, do feel free to catch me in the links below!
