REVIEW | Naruko Rose & Botanic HA Aqua Cubic and Bunga Raya Snow White Sheet Masks

Have you tried any sheet masks from Naruko? They are easily available not only at our drugstores but also on many e-commerce sites. As their price is super affordable with decent performance, they are super popular in Taiwan and in Malaysia too.

So I’ve tried two of the most famous ones which are the

Naruko Rose & Botanic HA Aqua Cubic Hydrating Mask EX

and the Naruko Bunga Raya Snow White Ice Cooling Mask

Read on to find out what I think of them!

Ingredients

Naruko Rose & Botanic HA Aqua Cubic Hydrating Mask EX

Purified (Aqua) Water, Butylene Glycol, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Xanthan Gum, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Algin, Phenoxyethanol, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Allantoin, Snow Fungus (Tremella Fuciformis) Extract, Kalanchoe Spathulata Extract*, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract*, Scutellaria Alpina Flower/Leaf/Stem Extract*, Peucedanum Ostruthium Leaf Extract*, Epilobium Fleischeri Extract*, Ginkgo Biloba Leaf Extract*, Artemisia Umbelliformis Extract*, Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract*, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract*, Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract*, Essential oils of Rose, Rosewood, Palmarosa, Petitgrain, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Rosa Gallica Flower Extract, Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9, Xylitylglucoside, Anthydroxylitol, Xylitol, Slaix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract

The star ingredient, as the name suggests, is rose. However, the three rose ingredients which are Essential oils of Rose, Rosa Damascena Flower Water, Rosa Gallica Flower Extract, and Rosa Centifolia Flower Extract are the bottom ingredients and not among the top ones so that gets me wondering about the efficacy of rose ingredients in this sheet mask. The hydrating ingredients in this mask are Butylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Snow Fungus (Tremella Fuciformis) Extract, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, and Xylitol. This sheet mask is free from paraben, sulfate, alcohol, and silicone in case any of these ingredients is one of your concern.

Naruko Bunga Raya Snow White Ice Cooling Mask

Purified Water (Aqua), Dipropylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, Hydroxyethyl Urea, Phenoxyethanol, Hydroxyethyl Ethylcellulose, Chlorphenesin, Carbomer, D-Panthenol, Triethanolamine, Saccharide Isomerate, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Hibiscus Rosa-Senensis Extracty Imperata Cylindrica Root Extract, Glycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Menthyl Lactate, Essential Oils of Rose (Rosa Damascena), Geranium (Pelargonium Graveolens), lodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, PEG-8, Sodium Citrate, Citric Acid, Maltodextrin, Saccharide Hydrolysate, Cl 16255, Potassium Sorbate.

This bunga raya mask has a much shorter ingredients list as compared to the Raw Job’s Tears one, with star ingredient is hibiscus that provides hydration, evens out the skin tone and reveals calmed, soothed skin. This bunga raya sheet mask is also free from paraben, sulfate, alcohol, and silicone in case any of these ingredients is one of your concern.

How to Use

The instructions on both Rose & Botanic HA sheet mask and Bunga Raya sheet mask are similar which are: after cleansing, apply the mask evenly onto face for 15-20 minutes. Remove mask and continue with usual skincare routine.

Here is a more detailed steps if you are a newbie to sheet masking a la Korean:

If you are familiar with the 10-step Korean skincare routine, you’ll know that sheet mask usually comes after serum or ampoules like this:

  1. Cleansing (first cleanser, and then second cleanser)
  2. Exfoliation
  3. Toner
  4. Essence
  5. Serum or/and Ampoule
  6. Sheet mask
  7. Eye cream
  8. Moisturiser
  9. Sleeping mask (optional)
  10. SPF (only in the AM)

Know that you don’t have to strictly follow ALL of these steps, this is just a guideline to see where your already existing products fit in and as to when and how to incorporate it while masking. For example, as for me, it usually goes like this:

  1. I would remove my makeup or sunscreen with cleansing oil or cleansing balm or micellar water (I rarely have time to put on sheet mask in the morning so I usually do midday sheet masking or night sheet masking)
  2. And then I would proceed with cleansing my face with second (water-based) cleanser
  3. Put on any pH balancing toner that I have
  4. Put on Naruko Rose & Botanic HA Aqua Cubic Hydrating Mask EX or Naruko Bunga Raya Snow White Ice Cooling Mask
  5. Seal it off with a lightweight moisturiser or water cream (sometimes during midday I skip this step and just slather my face with any moisturisng SPF
  6. SPF if it is during midday
  7. Eye cream and lip sleeping mask if it is at night

Sheet:

3.5/5 for both sheet masks

(Above: Rose & Botanic HA)

(Above: Bunga Raya Ice Cooling)

Both sheet material are about the same, the standard Naruko sheet mask material which is made of either tencel or cupra. It’s see-through and thin, and easily tearable. I even slightly tore off my first Naruko Rose & Botanic HA Aqua Cubic Hydrating Mask EX (I tried two of them for the purpose of this review).

Naruko provides a plastic separator for unfolding but still, mine was still torn off slightly. The sheet does not irritate my skin but is not the most comfortable sheet in the world either.

Adherence:

4/5 for both sheet masks

Adherence is pretty decent, it does not slide down easily but it does not feel super snug as of it is hugging my face either. Not bad, that’s what I’d say. I do not need to lie down when masking and I am still able to move about the house doing chores without it moving.

Fitting:

3/5 for both sheet masks

The masks are rather small for my big face and they both do not cover my entire wide forehead. the nose section is alright, so does the mouth but the eye holes are a bit small for my eyes and it makes the whole experience not so much of a pleasant one as I find that to be fairly bothering.

Essence:

Naruko Rose & Botanic HA Aqua Cubic Hydrating Mask EX: 2.5/5

A few minutes after putting it on, my face feels a stinging sensation that is apparent on my under eye, cheek, and upper lip areas. I tried to dismiss the discomfort and I made it to 4 minutes the first time of using and 7 to 8 minutes the second time which is not quite bad. I am not quite sure why or what caused the stinging sensation but I remember not having quite a joyful experience with their Naruko Rose & BOTANIC HA Aqua Cubic Moisturizer EX 森玫瑰水立方保湿乳EX too so yeah, there surely is something in the ingredient that doesn’t agree with my skin and I am yet to figure it out. I will update on this post once I have discovered the culprit.  The essence is not drippy, feels quite light and absorbs alright. After wearing, my face feels quite hydrated.

Naruko Bunga Raya Snow White Ice Cooling Mask: 3.5/5

The essence feels quite tacky at first but as I take the sheet off and pat it in, it dries down without any sticky feeling. The consistency of the essence is quite nice, it feels more like a toner instead of an essence for me. For my combination skin it feels adequately hydrating but I think for those with normal to dry skin you might feel like it is not enough and would need to finish off with other hydrating product in the subsequent steps in the routine. It feels quite cooling and I love using a jade roller with this. Skin feels a bit soothed. No stinging sensation or itchiness or redness.
