I have spent literally 6 out of 12 months either working from home or staying indoors throughout this year so when it comes to skin protection, I have only been focusing on basic functional sunscreen that’s not only easy to reapply all day long but also quick to remove.
Although I wouldn’t compromise my need for sunscreens that offer strong protection with broad spectrum even when I’m not spending my time directly under the sun so it was interesting when I discovered this Purity Sun Essence SPF50+ PA++++ from South Korean brand Face Republic as it fits to the kind of products that I’ve been indulging myself in for my daily skincare routine lately.
What’s to Know about this Sunscreen?
This is a clean and mild essence-like sunscreen with physical filter i.e. Zinc Oxide that provides great protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays that leaves non-sticky, lightweight finish.
How to Use:
- Apply an adequate amount on the face and neck at the final step of skincare.
- Apply generously 15 minutes before sun exposure (or makeup).
Capacity: 50ml – About 2 to 3 months of daily applications.
Water, Zinc Oxide, Propanediol, Coco-Caprylate / Caprate, Methylpropanediol, Niacinamide,Caprylyl Methicone, Butyloctyl Salicylate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Pentylene Glycol, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Methyl Methacrylate Crosspolymer, Ammonium Acrylolyldimethyltaurate / Vp Copolymer, Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose Stearoxy Ether, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Adenosine, T-Butyl Alcohol, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Butylene Glycol, Centella Asiatica Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract.
The product comes in a minimally designed box with product descriptions and full ingredients printed in English and Korean at the sides of the box for your easy reference. The product claims to have mild formula but there’s several different oils contained that can trigger fungal acne so definitely patch-test for few days prior using it on the facial area.
As shown above, the sunscreen comes with a simple screw cap with a small tube-end for easy product dispense and there’s simplified product descriptions printed at the back of the tube so it’s okay to discard the box.
The Manufacturing Date is printed at the top part of the tube in EXP YYYYMMDD (Year-Month-Day) format and like most South Korean skincare products, it’s good for 12 months only. I usually finished a tube of sunscreen like this under 2 months but if I were to alternate several different sunscreens throughout the year then I’d be sure to write down the opened date on my beauty journal or product tracker app.
The sunscreen comes in that almost opaque white and has lotion-like consistency but once spread even on skin, there is slightly visible white cast visible on skin thanks to the physical sunscreen agent; Zinc Oxide.
The texture is lightweight indeed so it is easy to spread on skin whether you’re using fingers or air puff like me. I would say that the scent is faint enough to go unnoticed.
As you can see in the above photo, there’s a nice luminous finish left on skin but I totally don’t mind that except for my oily T-zone which I’d be applying my favourite sebum-controlling loose powder on.
When it comes to the amount of sunscreen, there’s no exact rule of measurement of how much you’re going to need for your whole face but for easy reference, you can use your fingers and squeeze the tube along; 2 fingers for face and add 1 finger for neck area.
Thanks to its lightweight consistency, I’ve been obsessed with applying and reapplying the sunscreen throughout the day; whether I’m working from my living room or going out for groceries. The minimally designed packaging looks great and I just love the slim tube enough to carry it in my daily tote bag as I stand in queue outside supermarkets and banks.
Whether you have a lengthy 10-step or simple 3-step morning skincare routine, I do think this sunscreen is sufficient for daily use and ideal for those with normal to oily skin types but if you have dry or dehydrated skin like myself then definitely layer hydrating serum or opt for heavier cream underneath this sunscreen.

2020 was filled with not only roller-coaster situations especially around the COVID-19 news and updates, I could say the same went with my skin conditions
I’d say the type of makeup product that have gone unused for most of this year would be base makeup like foundations, blushes and bronzers
