Trying the Korean 7-skin method featuring Hatomugi Skin Conditioner

I came across this article about applying 7 layers of toner which Korean beauty bloggers dubbed these products as “skin,” thus naming it the 7-skin method. Apparently when you apply a bunch of skincare products on your skin at one time, sometimes before your skin actually absorbs the product, the product evaporates from the skin or just sits there without truly getting absorbed.

This toner layering method is to help wake up your skin to drink up more products by letting your skin absorb a thin layer of toner at a time. By doing it 7 times, the skin is getting an increased and healthy amount of hydrating ingredients, which gives your skin that glowy after facial outlooks. Apparently, if you do this 7-skin method consistently, your skin will look better and better as ample hydration levels help create a healthier skin environment for cells to function better.

Yes, 7 layers is a lot and seems really time consuming, but compared to the time and money spent doing facials to better penetrate products, this is definitely a much cheaper option. So read on to see me debunk this hype to see if it really works and whether you should try it too!

First off, how do you do the 7-skin method?

  1. Cleanse your face.
  2. On a cleansed face, apply the first layer of toner, best to be applied on slightly damp skin. This first layer can be applied using a cotton pad or with your hands.
  3. Repeat the steps until you’ve done it 7 times.
  4. After completing the 7th layer, you can start applying your usual skincare steps and adjust what you need to apply next depending on your skin’s needs for the day.

Which toner can I use?

Any toner or toner essence would do! I used Hatomugi’s Skin Conditioner because it’s one of COSME’s award winning toners and also it comes in a huge volume which was perfect for my experiment. A little about Hatomugi’s Skin Conditioner – it’s specially formulated with Vitamin B1 and B2 to target various kinds of skin problems, such as:

🌟 enlarged pores, fine lines and skin aging

🌟 acne concerns and uneven skin tone

🌟 balancing the skin’s acidity

🌟 smoothening the skin

🌟 enhancing the skin’s elasticity

🌟 long hour moisturizing

*Hatomugi’s Skin Conditioner can be used as a facial toner, 3 minute facial mask and body care.

My 7-skin method experience:

I was really not used to it the first few applications because it was just so time consuming since I had to wait for every layer to dry before applying the next. But after several gos, the application got quicker as my skin absorbed it much faster. It also helped that Hatomugi’s Skin Conditioner is very lightweight and non sticky, which makes it super pleasant to apply! I think from day 3 onwards I actually enjoyed the whole process and looked forward to it after every face wash. It felt like a quick mask, minus the cotton sheet & that cool feeling. I wasn’t expecting much of a difference but at the end of the 7 days, my skin appeared glowier and appeared clearer and healthier looking. I noticed my acne marks recovering faster than before and my skin felt deeply hydrated throughout the day. I also felt that my products absorbed better into my skin, as before this, I’d wake up with oily skin, probably due to the buildup of product not being absorbed in.

Before (left) vs After (right): Notice radiant, healthier looking skin and lightened acne scars

Overall, I was quite pleased with the results and would continue to try this in the long run to see if there are significant improvements in my skin. Definitely worth a shot to give this 7-skin method a go!
